iLove iPhoto: Lifelong Learning

The art of capturing visual imagery on your mobile device.
Alas! All wonderful things must come to an end... or should they?
"I don't want this amazing unit on iPhotography to come to an end!" I emphatically told my colleague Mr. Bill Tolley.
It was then that the beauty of collaboration came forth!
He replied, "It doesn't have to end. Have you heard of the app 'OkDoThis'? This app will foster lifelong learning and encourage kids interested in iPhotography to continue developing their skills even when your unit comes to an end."

I quickly downloaded OkDoThis to my iPad and instantly knew I had the perfect "ending" to a fabulous unit.

iLove iPhoto Final Challenge

I began my last lesson on iPhotography with the OkDoThis promotional video:
I then read to the students the OkDoThis story on how the app came to be from their website.

They begin by asking: "Why do you share your photos, anyway? Because you want to, not because you need to.
But there’s one thing every photographer needs, from the seasoned pro to the eager beginner:
  • You need an idea.
  • A creative decision.
  • A flash of inspiration.
Every photo is a moment in time. It’s ideas that capture those moments."

Then came the most powerful statement for the final challenge:
"While many of us see the same moments, we interpret them in our own ways."

OkDoThis Class Challenge
I opened the app with the students and looked over the challenges featured that week.
We selected two quick challenges to complete:
  • Shoe Shot: take a picture of the shoes you are wearing
  • 3 Things I Always Carry with Me
I gave the students 4 minutes to take and edit each challenge photo.
(Note: I used an online stopwatch and projected it on the board.)

When the timer went off, they had to hold their mobile devices up and share their creations with their peers.
This is what they came up with... while many of them saw the same moment, they interpreted them in their own ways.
Final Reflection: What iLoved about iPhoto
I wanted the final reflection to be memorable, so I created a wall on Padlet for all students to:
  • write about their favorite experience during this unit
  • pick their favorite pix to post

Here are their final thoughts...
I hope you enjoyed this experience with us as much as we have.
We would love to hear your feedback and see some of your own creations shared with us!

Hi there
Thank you so much for sharing. I am definitely going to use your idea on iPhoto. Can I ask you how do you format your padlet in such an easy way to read where all the posts are arranged one after another. A very engaging and interesting blog :)

Mrs. Rlim,
Thanks for your comment! It's super easy to change the layout.
1. Go to Padlet and select your "wall"
2. Click on the "Modify wall" gear icon (It's the last icon on the menu to your right)
3. Select "Layout"
4. I chose "Stream" instead of "Freeform"

Hope this helps :o)
